Personally I would go for Blackberry even if its not running Linux. Atleast it runs Qt :)

Me and a friend decided after some researching to buy the Ainol Aurora. Here I will gather some impressions/thoughts, perhaps display a few photos off the device and maybe a video.

I received it this Monday, so I've had a little time to play with it.
The good:

IPS Screen

HDMI

USB OTG

Some physical buttons(great for comic/book reading)

"Neutral":

Performance

Build quality(despite all-plastics, it does feel fairly solid)

Boot up time

Graphics card

The bad:

Feels somewhat cheap(stemming from the all-plastic construction, probably :p)

Screen bezel not flush with the rest of the chassis

I don't use the stock rom; it contains a lot of chinese apps and is actually pretty sluggish. I'm using Feiyumod: http://www.slatedroid.com/topic/2942...-mod-by-feiyu/ (version 0515)

Impressions:
Very, very light tablet. Unfortunately to the point where it feels cheap. Guess that's to be expected though(it is cheap).
I turn it on and immediately notice that the screen is pretty bright. I try out the brightness slider but the effect is rather restricted. Feels like the control goes from 75% to 100%, rather than 2% to 100%. Anyway, have a look around the menus and notice that the ROM is pretty clean. The launcher is a little slow though, but I've already decided I won't use it anyway so that doesn't matter.

Open up Android market/Play store, enter my account details and start browsing. Since I've already had a Android device, I have already purchased some apps/games so I start downloading stuff.
It manages about three concurrent store downloads before it starts to slow down, so I don't really think it's that slow. Beginning with Titanium Backup, I remove some of the preinstalled stuff I will never use, and freeze some system apps that for me is of no importance. The tablet doesn't get any speed improvements though.

Most stuff on the tablet works great, but there's one caveat if you'd like to game on it: It has the Mali 400 GPU. Not that it is a bad GPU, but it isn't that supported despite the fact that Samsung Galaxy SII has one. Common games, like Angry Birds, show up of course. SimCity Deluxe does not however, which is a shame since it's probably better on a tablet compared to a phone.

General "smooth"-ness is good, even more so when I close all apps. ICS seems to work differently compared to Gingerbread, and lands somewhere inbetween Maemo and Gingerbread regarding task managment. You of course have the background processes, like IRC clients. Then there's also a task switcher, where apps along with screenshots of them show up. I think some are still running, but there's no way to know for sure.
Closing them all does speed up the wakeup from sleep, as well as unlock. One weird thing I've found is that the miniature screenshots in Google Play lags when I scroll them. Otherwise, there's little to no lag in menus and apps.

Overall, it's not a bad tablet. I'd say you certainly get what you pay for. I wouldn't recommend it to someone who will exclusively game on it, since (somewhat common) games are missing. For everything else, it's brilliant. The IPS screen is not as good as my iPhone's, but theres some DPI differences so that might be it. Also, the IPS screen is definitely worth getting. The price difference is so small I don't think it makes sense to buy the Elf.

Overall, I'd rate it 7.5/10. With a little lower price, it had been an 8.

Here you can find some photos: http://imgur.com/a/Hh1Qv
(Don't be fooled by the Bluetooth icon. You need a USB Bluetooth adapter for it to work)

Might do a video demoing some stuff in a bit. Do suggest stuff to test, and I'll try to work something out.

Based of what I have seen, there are some tweaks by freemangordon and Estel tweaking overall swap settings I'd like to make permanent.
I'd also like to apply the SDCard swap during startup

What is the best method for this? Is it better to create a startup script in /etc/event.d, or is there an existing file to modify?
If so - how do you apply the changes?

Is striping swap across sdcard and emmc the best method, or is single swap on sdcard the better way to go?

Hi all,

Since yesterday, when I connect my N9 to the Nokia charger, the phone shows the 'choose USB connection' options (obviously this shouldn't happen because that charger is, well, just a charger). Next, it shows the 'not enough power to charge from the USB in order to charge the device'. Before I didn't have this problem at all.

When I plug the N9 into my laptop, the same problem occurs. In this case however, I can't connect the device to the laptop AT ALL, not through Nokia Link, not through PC Suite, not via the 'mass storage' option. Connecting the phone via Bluetooth to PC Suite works just fine.
In both cases (connect via charger/connect via laptop), the N9 charges VERY slowly (ie. after 1 hour of charging battery level is at 11%)

The only logical explanation that I can come up with is the fact that I've recently moved to a country with a very humid climate. When I look at both the small end of the USB cable and the USB port of the N9, I see blue-greenish colours on the metal, which I think is oxidation. Oxidation makes cables go bad. I've tried several micro-USB cables, problem didn't go away, which is why I think the USB port suffers from oxidation too. Phone nor cable have ever been wet.
I guess the only possible solution is dropping off the phone at a Nokia Care Point. Does anyone know if this problem will be covered by warranty? Phone is only 6 months old.

my problem has been mentioned in this topic before.

Thanks!

freemangordon urged me to announce this, so here it is:

Over at http://maemo.merlin1991.at/cssu/community-devel/ we have a repository that holds truly "bleeding edge" packages for cssu.

It's a double edged sword, on one hand you'll have the latest and greatest packages meant for the cssu, but on the other hand you risk installing mostly untested software.

The repository has no updated metapackage, so ham isn't going to notice most of the updates in here. The prefered way to upate would be to use

Code:

apt-get update
apt-get install PACKAGENAME

though the brave souls (or those who know what they do) can always run "apt-get upgrade"

Also since this is truly a development repo we would prefer to handle issues with packages from there within this thread and not on the bugtracker.

A log of the changes can be found here: http://maemo.merlin1991.at/cssu/comm...el/changes.log

I just got my first N900 last night and this morning set up Modest using MfE. I've got a couple of questions that I haven't been able to find answers to just yet.

1. When I reply to an email the email body as well as the "To" field are both a dark brown background with black text. Very hard to read. Is there someway to change this?

2. Also when I reply to an email the cursor starts on the same line as the headers from the original email, so I have to press enter a couple of times to get some space, and then arrow back up to start typing. Shouldn't that space be added by default like in every other mail client I've ever used?

3. I can put a widget on the desktop for new mail, but when I click on it it doesn't take me to the message, it takes me to a list of folders, and then I have to click on the Inbox and then click on the message. In N800 it would take me right to the message.

4. So I read in the Wiki that there is no search functionality (boo!) but is there no way to sort either?

I kind of feel like I might have overlooked a menu somewhere that would give the more advanced options?

Hi there!

I recently bought a N9, and I am loving it, although there is one thing that is bugging me. I bought the phone second hand, and the person who was selling it bought it from optus. The phone has been unlocked by optus, so I can use my own sim card, but since it is the optus model, it has some 'features' still on it. The main one is the "'yes' optus" logo. Whenever I lock the phone, it shows up right underneath the clock, this is the main feature I would like to remove, as I am not even using optus as my carrier :/ The second is a bunch of links to sections of the optus zoo website that are stuck on the homepage, and I can't delete them. (I have put them all into one optus folder)

Here are some photos:

Can anyone else reproduce this issue?
